We are seeking to fill a full-time non-tenured Assistant Teaching Professor position in the Astronomy Department at the University of Washington. Note that Assistant Teaching Professor title is a new title at the Univeristy of Washington, which replaces most lecture titles. The anticipated hire date is September 16, 2021 . The service period is 9 months (September 16 - June 15), with opportunities to teach in the summer. The initial appointment will be for 3 years. This position will teach undergraduate in-person and on-line classes, including large introductory classes and smaller upper-level courses for majors. Successful applicants will also be expected to lead educational training and evaluation within the department, which includes both helping to implement best practices throughout the instructional program, and training of Teaching Assistants.  Outside of the classroom, the successful applicant will find ways to support the broader educational mission of our department; opportunities include engaging with UW in the High School, developing and administering planetarium programming, assisting with the Pre-Major in Astronomy Program (Pre-MAP), serving as faculty mentor for student astronomy clubs, and maintaining and enhancing the UW Astronomy Clearinghouse. The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to academic strategic planning, management, and administration as required.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree, or foreign equivalent, in Astronomy or related field. Applicants must also have experience in training Teaching Assistants (TAs) or their equivalents. A successful candidate will have experience in teaching to a diverse student population. Lastly, applicants must also have experience in independently developing materials for a range of modalities to large classes, including in-person and online classes.
