Postdoctoral Scholar

The University of Washington Department of Astronomy requests applications for the position of Postdoctoral Scholar under the guidance of Professor Jessica Werk. The candidate will be expected to conduct forefront research on topics related to diffuse gas in the universe and its association with galaxies, using new survey data from HST, Gemini, and Keck telescopes and/or state-of-the-art cosmological simulations focused on the CGM. In addition, the selected candidate will have access to the Apache Point Observatory, and a large computer cluster at UW. Observers and theorists interested research related to galaxy evolution, in particular how it plays out in diffuse extended media are all encouraged to apply.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. or equivalent foreign degree in Astronomy or Physics earned before the start date (Fall 2019), and research experience in the fields of the interstellar or intergalactic medium. Demonstrated observational or theoretical expertise in the fields of the interstellar or intergalactic medium, galaxy formation, and/or chemical enrichment. Candidates should also have experience with proposal writing, have a strong publication record, and possess the ability to work independently yet collegially in a team environment. A desire to mentor undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Washington is preferred.

START DATE: October 1, 2019 (negotiable)

TERM OF APPOINTMENT:  Initial appointment is for one year, with possible extension for a total of three years; with annual reappointment contingent upon positive performance review and availability of funding.
