DESCRIPTION

The Inter Stellar+Galactic Medium Program of Studies (IMPS) in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Postdoctoral Scholar. The IMPS combines observational, numerical, and analytical studies of the I(S+G)M and of galaxy and star formation, and includes UCSC faculty Aguirre, Mathews, Madau, Robertson, and Prochaska. Under the direction of Professor J. Xavier Prochaska the Postdoctoral Scholar will conduct forefront research on topics related to diffuse gas in the universe. Observers and theorists interested in I(S+G)M research, galaxy/IGM interactions, and star formation are encouraged to apply. This position will require the selected candidate to work independently yet collegially in a team environment. Along with other group members, the incumbent will have access to the Keck and Lick Observatories, data from the DESI experiment, and the new super computer at UCSC. The applicant will also be invited to join the Applied Artificial Intelligence Initiative (https://aaii.ucsc.edu/) at UC Santa Cruz.

Applicants with any of qualifications or expertise in any of the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply: galaxy formation; chemical enrichment; star formation; diffuse gas; fast radio bursts; applied artificial intelligence; a demonstrated record of publication; and/or experience with proposal writing.

ACADEMIC TITLE
Postdoctoral Scholar

SALARY
Commensurate with qualifications and experience, starting at $60,000. Minimum annual salary rates are made based on the individual’s Experience Level, which is determined by the number of months of postdoctoral service at any institution. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in Astronomy, Physics, Astrophysics, or a related field at the time of appointment.

A minimum of three years post-baccalaureate research experience in the fields of the interstellar or intergalactic medium at the time of application.

POSITION AVAILABLE
September 1, 2020. Start date is negotiable, but incumbent must be available to start no later than November 1, 2020. Ph.D. must be in hand at time of the initial appointment.

MAXIMUM DURATION OF SERVICE IN A POSTDOCTORAL TITLE
Postdoctoral Scholar appointments are full-time; the initial appointment is for a minimum of one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Reappointment will be contingent upon positive performance review and availability of funding. The total duration of an individual’s postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including postdoctoral service at any institution. Under limited circumstances, an exception to this limit may be considered, not to exceed a sixth year.
