Job Description

The Kavli Institute for Theoretical Sciences (KITS) at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), Beijing, China and the Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (KIAA) at Peking University (PKU), Beijing, China, invite applications for a joint faculty position in the field of theoretical particle astrophysics.

KITS is an international center in pushing forward knowledge in theoretical physics and related disciplines, including (1) theoretical condensed matter physics, (2) theoretical high energy physics, (3) theoretical astrophysics, (4) quantum information and quantum computing, (5) biophysics and quantitative biology, (6) quantum chemistry.  KITS strives to integrate research and education by supporting postdoctoral fellows, teaching and mentorship of UCAS students, and sponsors and organizes programs and conferences in frontier topics to promote the exchange of scientific ideas within China and with the rest of the world.

KIAA is an international center of excellence with English as its working language.  KIAA promotes basic astrophysical research, including (1) observational cosmology, galaxy formation and evolution, (2) exoplanets, star formation, and stellar populations, (3) high-energy and gravitational physics, and (4) computational astrophysics.  KIAA is engaged in national and international initiatives in theoretical and observational astrophysics, pursued in partnership with a network of domestic and international astronomy centers.

The successful applicant will have a primary affiliation at KITS and a joint position at KIAA and will be able to access all the resources available to both KITS and KIAA, including undergraduate and PhD students at Peking University.  Topics of interest include but are not limited to theoretical or analytical support for future Chinese facilities in particle astrophysics, including LHAASO (Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory), HERD (High Energy cosmic Radiation Detection facility), JUNO (Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory), and GRAND (Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection).

RANK: We seek well-qualified applicants at the level of tenure-track assistant professor or full professor.

START DATE: September 1, 2020

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, planetary sciences or related fields and a demonstrated record of research excellence.  Candidates of any nationality are encouraged to apply and will be considered equally.

APPLICATION PROCESS: Applicants should submit a CV, a brief summary of research and teaching experience, a plan of future research, and arrange three confidential letters of recommendation to be sent via email to KITS director, Prof. Fuchun Zhang at:  [email protected].  Inquiries about KITS should be sent to [email protected] and about KIAA may be directed to Ms. Lili Liu at [email protected]
