The successful applicant will work with Dr Stuart Littlefair and Dr Steven Parsons to measure the initial-final mass relationship (IFMR) of white dwarfs. The research will involve the reduction and modelling of spectroscopic data for wide white dwarf binaries, identified using Gaia DR2 and eDR3. You will have access to high quality spectroscopic observations from FORS2 on the VLT. You will form part of the world leading research group on high time resolution science at Sheffield, with access to ULTRACAM on the 3.5m NTT and HiPERCAM on the 10.4m GTC.
