Job Announcement Text:

Applications are invited for an STFC-funded postdoctoral position to work on the exploitation of surveys of the Milky Way.

The position is available from 1 October 2017, although later commencement will be negotiable.  The position is funded until the expiry of our present STFC grant on 31 March 2019.  In the imminent grant application round we anticipate applying for a continuation of the post until 31 March 2022

The postholder will be based in the Rudolf Peierls Centre for Theoretical Physics.  He or she will be expected to work on one or more of the following themes related to the exploitation of the upcoming DR2 release of the Gaia survey and related surveys: (i) developing dynamical models of our Galaxy; (ii) predicting from them the results of surveys of our Galaxy; (iii) drawing inferences about the structure and history of the Galaxy by comparing the predictions with data.

Successful candidates should have, or be about to obtain, a PhD in physics, mathematics or a related field.  They should have experience of scientific computing, an interest in Bayesian inference, and have produced high-quality scientific research.  They should demonstrate the capacity for independent work.
