Job Description

The Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences invites applications for a

TENURE-TRACK PROFESSORSHIP (W1 TENURE TRACK LEADING TO A W2) FOR MACHINE LEARNING IN PARTICLE PHYSICS or ASTROPHYSICS

commencing as soon as possible, ref. no. JP 294.

The professorship is part of the newly established Cluster of Excellence Quantum Universe at Universität Hamburg funded through Germany’s Excellence Strategy for research. Quantum Universe brings together leading scientists from mathematics, particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology at Universität Hamburg and DESY to understand mass and gravity at the interface between quantum physics and cosmology.

Responsibilities:

We are seeking applications from candidates internationally recognized for the development of machine learning techniques and their application to particle physics, experiments with colliders or observational astrophysics and cosmology. Possible research directions include, but are not limited to, pattern recognition in experimental data, Higgs Physics and searches for physics beyond the standard model, radio astronomy or high-energy astrophysics.

The professorship is based in the Department of Physics. The successful candidate is expected to actively participate in the instruction of students through lectures, classes, and seminars as well as supervising thesis projects in all subjects offered by the Department of Physics.

Tenure-track evaluation will be conducted during the second phase of the junior professorships in order to determine whether requirements for appointment to a W2 professorship have been met. Section 15 HmbHG applies. If the evaluation is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured W2 professorship. The regulations prohibiting internal appointments (Hausberufungsverbot) also apply to this junior professorship.
