Job Description

ELECTRONICS ENGINEER, NEXT-GENERATION EVENT HORIZON TELESCOPE,

SMITHSONIAN ASTROPHYSICAL OBSERVATORY

EHT is the project that produced the first ever image of a black hole, announced in press conferences worldwide on April 10, 2019. The EHT images emission from supermassive black holes on event-horizon scales, directly testing Einstein’s theory of general relativity in the strong field limit. Our team includes engineers, theoreticians, software developers, astronomers, and imaging algorithm experts. Our goal is to refine our breakthrough imaging in the near term, and advance to making real-time movies of black holes in the longer term.

This position will provide expert electronics engineering, with digital signal processing specialization, to work with senior EHT instrument scientists on long-range development of game-changing advances in millimeter- and submillimeter-wave very-long- baseline- interferometry (VLBI) astrophysical instrumentation. The Electronics Engineer will implement advanced data processing designs with ultra-high performance recording and computing platforms based on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), Graphics Processor Unit (GPU), and Central Processor Unit (CPU) technologies. This will lead to development of advanced recording systems and phased array processor systems for the EHT stations.
