Job Announcement Text:

The Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU) and the Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (KIAA) at Peking University invites applications for the Kavli Astrophysics Postdoctoral Fellowship, to begin in 2018. This independent prize fellowship is for four years, to be split between Kavli IPMU and KIAA, and offers an annual salary of $70,000/year and research funds of $10,000 per year. This fellowship program is funded partially by the Kavli Foundation.

The Kavli Astrophysics Postdoctoral Fellowship will support outstanding postdoctoral scientists to carry out their independent research, with a preference for areas that intersect with the interests of Kavli IPMU and KIAA faculty. The fellow will spend two years at Kavli IPMU and two years at KIAA, pending satisfactory performance. The Fellowship is open to all applicants who received their PhD after 1 January 2016, and will graduate prior to their expected start date.

Kavli IPMU is an international research institute in Japan with English as its official language. The goal of the institute is to explore fundamental laws of the Universe from a synergistic perspective of mathematics, physics, and astronomy. Kavli IPMU is one of the leading institutions of the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) Survey, a 300-night Subaru campaign that began in March 2014. Kavli IPMU is also leading the development of the Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS), which will conduct a BAO, high-z galaxy, and galactic archeology survey after the completion of the HSC program. Kavli IPMU is a full member of SDSS-III and -IV.

KIAA is located on the historic grounds of Peking University in China, has English as the working language, and regularly sponsors thematic workshops and conferences to provide a platform for national and international scientific exchanges. Astronomy at PKU includes 25 faculty, 30 postdoctoral fellows, 60 graduate students, 120 undergraduates, and many visiting scholars. KIAA has priority access to a wide range of domestic and international telescopes and to domestic supercomputing facilities.

This year, we are considering applications with Kavli IPMU as the host for the first two years. Therefore, applicants should send a cover letter, CV, publication list, and a 3-page research plan to Kavli IPMU before the deadline of December 1. Kavli IPMU submissions should be uploaded at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/fellowship/11973. Applicants should also arrange for at least three confidential letters of recommendation to be uploaded at AcademicJobsOnline.org.

Questions can be sent to [email protected] or those pertaining to KIAA Beijing to [email protected].
