PRINCIPAL ENGINEER - SPACE INSTRUMENTATION

Lead the development of science instruments for space flight missions; work with scientists and engineers across technical boundaries to develop instrument concept; spearhead new technology development of detectors and electronics in laboratory vacuum systems; travel to the facilities of other instrument team members to participate in design meetings; oversee the process of writing requirement and specification documents; lead the design of flight electronics to meet high-reliability requirements that are necessary for NASA missions; direct the development of prototype experiments in the laboratory; review procedures and oversee comprehensive hardware verification tests; organize and deliver presentations to NASA representatives in formal design reviews; provide support for instrument qualification tests and calibration, including field tests at customer facilities (NASA centers, government labs); participate in commissioning and operation of science instrument after it has been launched into space.
Education/Experience:
Requires a BS degree in Electrical Engineering with at least a 3.0 GPA. Advanced degree (MSEE or equivalent) is desirable/preferred. Requires 15 - 20 years of related experience to include strong analog design and analysis skills, a digital design background, and hardware/software troubleshooting. Must possess the ability to lead and mentor less experienced engineering staff, lead/direct the development of prototype experiments, scientific instruments and spearhead new technology developments; experience with scientific instruments associated electronics and detector systems preferred with the ability to write requirement and specification documents, procedures and conduct comprehensive hardware verification tests; must possess strong communication and presentation skills to deliver presentations to internal as well as external customers (NASA, ESA, commercial). A valid/clear driver's license is required.
