Job Description

The E.A. Milne Centre for Astrophysics at the University of Hull invites applications for a new postdoctoral research position in Computational Galaxy Cluster Physics to join a vibrant, rapidly expanding, and collaborative group, and contribute to our ambitious plans to establish one of the United Kingdom's premier centres for astrophysics within the country.

The successful applicant will work in the area of computational astrophysics of galaxies and galaxy clusters, in particular in modelling the mutual interaction of cold/warm multiphase gas, star formation, and the hot intra-cluster medium. A three-year full-time appointment will be made.

Applicants should have a PhD in physics, astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely-related field. Demonstrable skills in computational hydrodynamics and/or magneto-hydrodynamics as well as experience in high performance computing are highly desirable.

The successful candidate will have open access to ‘viper’, the University of Hull’s new high performance computing facility (HPC); commissioned in June 2016, ‘viper’ is one of the country’s most powerful HPC facilities. The candidate will work in an international team including collaborators who have spectacular observational data in hand to be compared to our simulation results.

The fellowship is available from as early as September 2018. The appointment will be made at the University's Band 7 level. Only online applications are accepted at https://jobs.hull.ac.uk/Vacancy.aspx?ref=FS0358. Please include your CV, a summary of your interests and potential collaborative research plans for the coming 2-3 years in your application. Show also how you meet the criteria of the given person specification.

To discuss this role informally, please contact Dr Elke Roediger, at [email protected], citing the job reference "FS0358" in the subject line.
