Job Description

Shanghai Astronomical Observatory (SHAO) is seeking to fill several faculty positions in any area of observational, theoretical, and computational astrophysics. Research fields include AGNs and high-energy astrophysics, galaxy formation and evolution, cosmology, star formation, asteroseismology, the structure and evolution of the Milky Way, galactic dynamics, numerical astrophysics, astrostatistics, radio astrophysics (especially SKA and sub-millimeter VLBI science), gravitational wave astrophysics, and exoplanets. SHAO employs a mix of Chinese and international astrophysicists, including more than 50 faculty members, 20 postdocs, and 80 PhD students. SHAO belongs to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which provides a diverse setting and research facilities, such as LAMOST, FAST etc. The institute also possesses its own facilities such as the 65-m Tianma radio telescope and excellent computational facilities. SHAO is deeply involved in SKA project, especially is pushing to construct the SKA regional science center for Asia. SHAO is the host institute of one of the four CSST science center, and leading the science developments of the two instruments, MCI and IFS, on board of CSST. SHAO is leading the study of the Earth 2.0 space mission aiming at detecting habitable Earth-like planets around solar type stars and free-floating low-mass planets with the satellite to be launched in 2026. Members of the institute are also actively involved in various international and domestic projects such as EHT, LHAASO, LAMOST, LAGER, HXMT, eXTP, JCMT, FAST, KAGRA, Taiji and LISA.

Applicants must possess a Ph.D. degree and have a demonstrated record of outstanding research, along with a strong commitment to contribute to graduate education (but no teaching commitment is required). Active researchers of all nationalities are encouraged to apply. The salary and start-up grant will be highly competitive.
