Job Description

The Department of Astronomy at The Ohio State University invites applications for a Senior Design Engineer staff position in our Imaging Sciences Laboratory. We seek candidates who would work with astronomy department faculty, students, and lab personnel on the definition, development, design, and construction of advanced astronomical instruments. Desired systems engineering skills include: requirements definition and flow-down, interface control, configuration control, document management, and performance verification throughout development, assembly, integration, test and commissioning. Experience with advanced astronomical instrumentation is desired but not required.

Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree in industrial and systems engineering, mechanical engineering, or electrical engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; experience with systems engineering best practices applied to development of new equipment; experience as a design engineer, systems engineer, or project engineer with an emphasis on systems engineering; demonstrated writing and communication skills. Experience working with engineers, technicians, machinists, and scientists in the design, construction, and testing of astronomical instruments is desired but not required. Appointment is contingent on the university’s verification of credentials and other information required by law and/or university policies, including but not limited to a criminal background check.
