The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) seeks an outstanding candidate to lead our Instruments Division (INS) from our headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland.
STScI serves as the Science Operations Center for two of NASA’s Great Observatories, the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope. STScI is also the Science Operations Center for the upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, scheduled for launch in the mid-2020s. We provide the core expertise to exploit the full potential of these missions and enable astronomical discovery by the scientific community. We lead strategic programs to expand the horizons of our missions and develop innovative techniques to address novel science questions. Instruments Division staff calibrate, maintain, and expand the capabilities of the science instruments on our missions, and provide tools and support for research scientists around the globe. The division is also responsible for providing expertise and knowledge in optics and telescope systems.
As INS Head, you will identify and exploit science-enhancing harmonies across our missions. You and your teams will deliver new technologies, services, and infrastructures that advance scientific discovery. You will lead a management team of 15 and guide a division of ~150 staff. You will coordinate cross-divisional work to develop calibration pipelines, data analysis tools, proposal preparation tools, and science operation procedures. You will work with the missions to ensure that their priorities are addressed and will be responsible for the overall execution, quality, and timeliness of high quality products and services.
As INS Head, you will be a member of the Director’s Leadership Team, which takes a strategic perspective and leadership role in defining and advancing high-level priorities of the Institute. The strategic goal will be to deliver new technologies, services, and infrastructures that advance scientific discovery
The position requires a combination of short-term tactical skills and longer-term strategic vision; effective delegation to other team members and organizational units will be paramount to success. We welcome candidates with a diverse range of skills.

An advanced degree, or comparable experience in astronomy, physics, planetary science or a related field. The INS Head will have the opportunity to carry out self-directed research if desired.
