Job Description

The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher to work with Dr. Marc Rafelski on observational studies of high redshift galaxies and their gas reservoirs. The research will involve scientific analysis and publication, data reduction, and proposals for new observations with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), and large ground-based facilities.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on multiple projects, including (1) emission-line studies of z~2-3 galaxies in the HST+MUSE Ultra Deep Field, and (2) absorption line systems (Damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs) and Lyman Limit systems (LLS)) to study the gas in and around galaxies. Part of the successful applicant's time may be available for independent research or new projects in related areas.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in Astronomy, Physics, or related fields at the start of the post-doctoral researcher position. Research experience in the areas of high-redshift galaxies, the circumgalactic medium (CGM), or the intergalactic medium (IGM) is desirable. Expertise in UV-optical-NIR photometry and spectroscopy is a plus. More important is the willingness to take on new projects, learn new skills, and work independently to bring these projects to fruition.

Questions about the position should be directed to [email protected].
The nominal start date is expected to be in Summer/Fall 2019, but other dates are negotiable. The initial appointment is for two years, with an expected renewal to a 3rd year subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
STScI, located on Johns Hopkins University Campus in Baltimore, Maryland, offers an excellent benefit package, competitive salaries, and a stimulating work environment. STScI's pay is commensurate to the year of Ph.D.
