Postdoctoral Position in the MPE High Energy Group
Job Summary
Job Description
The Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) is a world-leading institute in space- and ground-based experimental astrophysics, with leading roles in a number of large astronomical projects. The High-Energy group, led by Prof. K. Nandra, carries out major space hardware programs, including the development of X-ray detectors and X-ray optics.
The MPE invites applications for a postdoctoral position to work with Dr. Esra Bulbul in the High Energy Group at MPE. The successful candidate is expected to lead a research program on X-ray studies of clusters of galaxies utilizing the forthcoming all-sky survey by the eROSITA instrument, which is due for launch on the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma mission in 2019. Candidates should have experience with the analysis of X-ray data or strong scientific interest working in this area.
MPE hosts a dynamic, collaborative, and multi-wavelength program in the area of clusters of galaxies. The ongoing projects pursued by the group members include cosmology, dark matter searches, and astrophysics of baryons in the intra-cluster medium. The successful candidate will interact and collaborate with the members of this group.
Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent degree in physics, astronomy, or a related field by the date of the appointment.
The appointment will be for 2 years, with the possibility of extension to 3 years.
Funding for travel, computing and publication expenses will be provided dependent on availability.
The salary and social benefits are based on the German TVöD scale for public employees, depending on experience.

Review will begin soon after that date, but later applications may be considered if received before the selection process is completed. Three referees should be identified, who can provide letters of recommendation upon request. Prospective applicants can contact Dr. E. Bulbul for further information (email: [email protected]).
