The internationally known desert resort City of Rancho Mirage California is seeking a highly motivated, energetic, program-oriented astronomer to guide its brand new observatory located at its award-winning Public Library.
The City of Rancho Mirage has had one of the finest and busiest libraries in California and the nation since its 1996 ribbon cutting by a former president and first lady. In 2006, the City rededicated its Library in a brand new building that incorporates beautiful desert and mountain views with multiple performance venues and special collections. The Library welcomes 800–1,200 visitors daily.
The Rancho Mirage Writers Festival, the most exciting book and author event in America since 2014–brings 50 authors and 1,000 readers to the Library each January. The Festival will be in its fifth year in 2018, covered from opening to conclusion on C-Span.
In 2018, Rancho Mirage will open the best and possibly the only Observatory on a public library campus in California or the United States. This Observatory has been designed with the assistance of the California Institute of Technology, through support by the staff of Mt. Palomar Observatory. The Rancho Mirage Observatory is built around a 27" Plane Wave CDK telescope with remote controlled technology within a remarkable architectural design.
The position of Astronomer offers the right science-oriented candidate an opportunity to fully utilize this important asset to develop programming with an educational, and entertainment focus that will bring astronomy to all ages throughout the Library's calendar. The programming possibilities offered by the observatory will build upon the Library's award winning program guide.
The City's astronomer will report to the Library Director and be part of a devoted team of librarians, staff, and volunteers who bring a passion to their mission-lifelong learning. This has resulted in the stellar reputation of the City of Rancho Mirage and its Library. The new Observatory will only add to this reputation.
