Job Description

Come join the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST) at the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), located on the campus of Johns Hopkins University. MAST is the home for the data from over 20 past, current and future space and ground-based missions, including Hubble, Kepler, GALEX and the future James Webb Space Telescope. MAST is seeking an Archive Scientist to provide scientific, technical and computational expertise to enhance the MAST Archive including support of the Hubble Space Telescope and the future James Webb Telescope holdings.

The Archive Scientist will support archive projects to enhance the scientific utilization of the data and meta-data through existing and future data-mining techniques. In addition, the Archive Scientist will participate in planning, definition and implementation of processes, procedures and tools to enhance the Guide Star for mission operations.

This position includes the option to buy back up to 50% of your time (FTE) for personal research through the use of any external funding or grants you may receive.

Requirements:

This position requires a PhD in Astronomy, Physics, or a related field. Candidates should have 5 or more years of experience working with astronomical catalogs.

Familiarity with astronomical catalogs or large data sets and SQL is required.

Familiarity with one or more of the following is a plus:

• Relevant software programming languages (e.g. Python, IDL)
• Astrometry, photometry and classification derived from astronomical images
• Astronomical sky surveys
• Analysis and understanding of mission requirements
• Procedure writing and maintenance
