Job Description

The Astronomy Department at The University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow to work in UT’s engaging and diverse high-redshift galaxy evolution group. Applicants with experience including but not limited to processing and analyzing imaging and spectroscopic data and SED fitting of distant galaxies are particularly encouraged to apply.  We are also interested in applicants with a desire to assist in the mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students and play a role in our departmental community.  UT Austin is an EEO/AA employer, and astronomers from traditionally marginalized backgrounds and women are especially encouraged to apply.

The successful applicant will study high-redshift galaxies using data from JWST in collaboration with Prof. Steve Finkelstein.  This includes data from the CEERS, NGDEEP and COSMOS-Web Cycle 1 programs.  The applicant will be encouraged to collaborate on projects with the UT high-redshift group to use these datasets to uncover the earliest phases of galaxy evolution, and to develop future JWST programs.

UT Austin has a large astronomy department, and is committed to an equitable and inclusive environment.  The successful applicant will have access to high-performance computing resources within the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) and the McDonald Observatory facilities.  Austin is a vibrant city with an active music and cultural scene, and excellent weather allowing year-round outdoor activities.

By the anticipated starting date of 9/1/2023 (sooner is very possible) the applicants should have obtained a Ph.D. in Astronomy or Physics.  The appointment is for an expected period of three years (based on satisfactory performance).  Salary will be commensurate with experience.  UT has an excellent benefits program (hr.utexas.edu/prospective/benefits).

Applicants should submit a CV, list of publications, statement of current and future research interests (max five pages), and a list of three people who can be contacted for letters of reference.  Complete applications received by 12/1/2022 will receive full consideration.  Applications will only be accepted as a single PDF sent to: [email protected], under a subject “Postdoc Position — YOUR NAME”.  Questions regarding this position should be addressed to [email protected].
