Job Description
In this position, you will collaborate with team members to develop, maintain, deploy, and support webserver and desktop applications which are used by astronomers to plan observations for the James Webb Space Telescope.
Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is the science operations center for several NASA missions, including the Hubble Space Telescope, the most famous space observatory in history. We also lead the science and mission operations for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), planned to launch in 2021, and will perform parts of the science operations for the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (former WFIRST), in formulation for launch in the mid-2020s.
In this position, you will collaborate with team members to develop, maintain, deploy, and support webserver and desktop applications which are used by astronomers to plan observations for the James Webb Space Telescope. You will:
Design, develop, and support webserver applications, project team test infrastructure, and other ancillary systems
Support and administer production web application and internal servers
Collaborate in a small team setting
Work independently, given a well-defined set of requirements
Adapt to changing requirements
Organize multiple projects
Document and report items accurately and in a timely manner
Job Requirements
We invite you to apply if you have a BS/BA in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related scientific or technical field and a minimum of 3 years of software development experience, including:
Experience with one or more object-oriented languages, such as Python and Java
Experience with shell scripting (bash or similar language)
Experience with Linux/Unix software installation and system administration
Basic competency in networking and SQL databases
Basic competency with a distributed version control system such as git
Good written and verbal communication skills
Good problem solving and debugging skills
Good collaboration skills and a team-player mentality
Preferred Experience
Python, especially in the tornado webserver and websocket libraries
Java application development
Tomcat webserver
AWS, including any compute, database, management, networking, storage, or security skills
Server development
Security compliance
OSX
ElasticSearch and Kibana
Agile development practices
Javascript
