Job Description

Radio Astronomy Correlator Project Manager

Job Ad: https://recruitment-recrutement.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/job-invite/14588/

Deadline: March 19, 2022

The National Research Council of Canada's Herzberg Astronomy and Astrophysics Research Centre (NRC-HAA), is seeking a looking for a Radio Correlator Project Manager (RCPM) to support our development of radio astronomy instrumentation at the Herzberg Astronomy and Astrophysics Research Centre (HAA). HAA has a rare combination of staff involved in astronomy research, instrumentation design and development, engineering, data science and observatory support.

HAA is a leading developer of instrumentation for Canada’s current and future ground- and space-based telescopes from optical through to radio wavelengths (e.g., ALMA, SKA, ngVLA, CFHT, Gemini, TMT). Its multi-disciplinary team includes project managers, optical, electrical, mechanical and systems engineers and technicians, signal processing experts and astronomers.  Current major activities include participation in the development of optical/NIR spectrographs for Gemini, adaptive optics systems for TMT, correlator upgrades and central signal processing architectures for the SKA and ALMA, receiver development for MeerKAT, composite dish antenna designs for new radio observatories, CHIME expansion and the development of CHORD.

The RCPM will be someone who provides project leadership and management of astronomy technology projects, specifically two projects delivering correlator/breamformer digital signal processing systems for the Square Kilometer Array (SKA) and Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) – two of the most advanced radio observatories in the world.  These projects leverage signal processing technology and algorithms developed in-house by HAA to design and deliver multi-million dollar correlator/beamformer systems.  When integrated with these observatories, HAA’s unique signal processing systems will lead to revolutionary discoveries in fields such as star formation, the evolution of life in the Universe, and the nature and growth of black holes.

The RCPM will play a leadership role in these cutting-edge science & technology projects, work with enthusiastic, highly-invested colleagues from within the NRC and around the globe, all while representing Canada in high-profile international projects to build the biggest and most advanced scientific instruments in the world.

The RCPM provides project management expertise, using project management tools and applying domain-specific technical knowledge, to deliver timely and cost effective projects to external and internal clients of NRC in support of the Directorate’s business goals and objectives. They support project objectives by adhering to the Directorate’s or customers project management standards, including identifying requirements, establishing clear and achievable objectives, balancing the competing demands for quality, scope, time and cost, and adapting specifications, plans and approach to meet the expectations of the various stakeholders.  They supervise project teams with a diverse technical skill set including signal processing algorithm design, electronic circuit board design, mechanical engineering, software engineering, and Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) firmware development.  Project teams operate in a matrix environment, and the RCPM is responsible for project schedules and budgets, and for delivering the defined project scope on budget and schedule. They will work closely with the project coordination team, who will provide project management support to their projects.

The RCPM will primarily be engaged in managing large, complex, and mult-disciplinary digital signal processing instrumentation projects for radio astronomy and will be expected to work closely with NRC and industrial partner project engineers; therefore a background in the management, design, production, and commissioning of similar large and complex technical systems is essential.

The initial appointment is of five years duration with all the benefits associated with term employment at NRC-HAA, including paid maternity and parental leave, vacation, accruable pension contributions and a highly competitive salary.
