PANOPTES POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW – ID# 18332. 

National Astronomical Observatory of Japan.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), Panoptic Astronomical Networked Observatories for Public Transiting Exoplanets Survey (PANOPTES) Project, located in Hilo, Hawai‘i.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY:  $3,260/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Project PANOPTES is a citizen science based, distributed telescope network which aims to detect extrasolar planets using the transit method. By combining a large number of observations by small, inexpensive telescopes and cameras the project will obtain the necessary sensitivity to detect extrasolar planets. The project is seeking a postdoctoral researcher who is interested in data reduction pipelines to assist in the development of the project’s cloud based pipeline which uses a unique algorithm to obtain high quality photometry from Digital Single Lens Reflector (DSLR). 

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  PhD from an accredited college or university in Astronomy or related field. (PhD candidates may apply but must submit evidence of PhD completion upon hire).  EXPERIENCE:  Two to four (2-4) years of research experience in astronomy or physics, and astronomical data analysis.  ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS:  Knowledge in observational astronomy. Knowledge in analysis of astronomical datasets and associated programming/scripting techniques. Good verbal and written communication skills. Skills to prepare practical scientific documents.  POLICY AND/OR REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS:  As a condition of employment, employee will be subject to all applicable RCUH policies and procedures and, as applicable, subject to University of Hawai‘i's and/or business entity's policies and procedures.  Violation of RCUH's, UH's, or business entity's policies and/or procedures or applicable State or Federal laws and/or regulations may lead to disciplinary action (including, but not limited to possible termination of employment, personal fines, civil and/or criminal penalties, etc.).  

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:  Previous involvement in astronomical data processing of large datasets. Experience with automated survey observation facilities. Previous scientific outreach experience.
