Job Announcement Text:

The Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Toledo (UT) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in astronomy/astrophysics, commencing August 2017. We seek someone with a strong track record of research accomplishment in any area of astrophysics, observational or theoretical. We welcome applicants with additional strengths in education and public outreach. A PhD in astronomy, physics, or a closely related field, plus postdoctoral experience is required. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an active, independent, externally-funded research program. An established history of external funding support would be valuable. Excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level is expected, and candidates should plan to involve graduate and undergraduate students in their research program.

Our astronomy and astrophysics group consists of 10 faculty, approximately 15 graduate students and several postdocs. UT is a new member of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA), and has recently joined as a partner in the 4.3m Discovery Channel Telescope (DCT). Applicants with research programs that could exploit our dedicated DCT access are particularly encouraged.

Current research expertise in the department includes galaxy evolution, Galactic/extra-galactic star formation, stellar clusters, ultracool stars and exoplanets, stellar winds and atmospheres, circumstellar disks, origin of elements, interstellar matter, and dust astrophysics. The in-house Ritter Planetarium is a major outreach venue, with a full-time professional staff providing programs to more than twenty-thousand visitors per year. The newly renovated Ritter 1m telescope on campus is in active use for student training and long-term research programs.

Complete applications should be submitted as a single PDF document to the Job Posting Website above.  The application should include: (i) a cover letter, (ii) curriculum vitae, (iii) a research plan (3 pages maximum), and (iv) a teaching statement (2 pages maximum). Applicants should also arrange for three letters of reference to be sent to [email protected]. For full consideration, applications should be received by December 12, 2016, but the position remains open until filled.

The University of Toledo is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer and values equality of opportunity, human dignity and diversity.  Women and members of minority groups that are under-represented in academia are especially encouraged to apply, as are dual-career professionals.
