Job Description

The ISM Evolution and Star Formation group (http://ism.bao.ac.cn/en/) at the National Astronomical Observatories of China (NAOC), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) are seeking a post-doctoral scholar in the field of radio astronomy, with a focus on Galactic HI studies with The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). We have a diverse and collaborative group that conducts research projects using FAST, JCMT, SMA, NOEMA, ALMA, Parkes, GMRT, VLBA, Keck, Palomar, SOFIA, etc. Our group leads the Commensal Radio Astronomy FAST Survey (CRAFTS, http://crafts.bao.ac.cn), one of the major surveys with FAST. Based on novel calibration and observation techniques, CRAFTS will cover >50% of the full sky and obtain data streams of Galactic and Extra-Galactic HI imaging, pulsars, FRBs and other transients, simultaneously. The post-doctoral scholar will be expected to take a leading role in HIFAST (The Galactic HI 21cm map of the entire FAST sky as part of CRAFTS). With observations and data reduction already underway, the scholar will have many opportunities for scientific discovery and publication.

We seek candidates of the highest caliber. Applicants with experience in data reduction, radio telescope calibration, and HI imaging will be given preference. Fluency in Chinese is not required. Qualified applicants will be recommended to apply for NSFC young investigator grants, the CAS postdoctoral fellowship, and the EACOA Fellowship, all of which have been obtained by previous fellows in the group.

The starting annual compensation ranges from $35,000 to $55,000, contingent upon qualifications and performance. A travel and research grant will also be provided. The initial contract will be for one year, with the possibility of yearly renewal and salary increase up to 3 years. Exceptional candidates may negotiate their salary beyond the given range. This position offers excellent opportunities for career advancement, as many of our group's previous Post-doctoral fellows have advanced to staff positions.

Inquires should be sent to Dr. Marko Krco ([email protected]). A curriculum vitae, research plan, and three letters of reference, should be sent to Dr. Shi ([email protected]). The review process will begin on May 24th, 2021. The application will remain open until the position is filled.
