Job Description

The Department of Physics and Astronomy in the Faculty of Science at the University of Waterloo invites applications and nominations for a tenured Distinguished Chair Position in Astrophysics.  The search is focussed on preeminent astrophysicists with an outstanding scholarly record and scientific-leadership qualities.  The candidate will be selected based on the potential for a transformative and positive impact in areas of astrophysics.  The successful candidate will be at the full-professor rank and hold the Research Chair for a period of ten years, and have access to internal research funding at an exceptional level.  Responsibilities will include the supervision of graduate students as well as teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.  We expect an effective date of appointment of July 1, 2017.  The salary range for this position is $200,000 - $300,000/year.  Negotiations beyond this salary range will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates.  The Physics and Astronomy Department, http://www.physics.uwaterloo.ca, is part of the Faculty of Science and has thriving groups in astrophysics, biophysics, condensed matter, optics and quantum information.  The Department has close ties with both Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics (http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca) and Institute for Quantum Computing (https://uwaterloo.ca/institute-for-quantum-computing).  Opportunities for formal association with these research institutes exist.  This appointment is subject to the availability of funds.  More information about the Faculty of Science can be found from http://www.science.uwaterloo.ca.
