NOIRLab invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position in time-domain astronomy. The postdoc will work with Dr. Monika Soraisam and collaborators (Prof. Puragra Guhathakurta, Drs. Ben Williams, Knut Olsen, Cliff Johnson, and Leo Girardi). They will execute an ambitious archival research project studying stellar variables in Andromeda using HST data, leveraging the latter's capabilities to probe faint and crowded sources beyond the reach of ground-based surveys. In particular, they will develop a difference imaging pipeline to systematically mine the HST data, use machine learning tools for classification of the detected variable sources, and perform scientific analyses.
The position is available immediately (although a later start date may be negotiated). The initial appointment is for 2 years, with the possibility of extension for an additional year subject to funding availability.
- PhD in Astronomy, Physics, Planetary Science, or a related field by the start date
- Previous experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Reduction of ground-based/space-based data, in particular, HST data
- Difference imaging techniques
- Machine learning (classical or deep learning)
- Studies of variable stars
- Theoretical modeling of pulsating stars
- Ability to learn new skills and work independently
- Being self-motivated, highly organized, and dependable
