SUBARU INSTRUMENTATION/RESEARCH SPECIALIST – ID# 221227.
National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the NAOJ, Subaru Telescope, located in Hilo, HI. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds & compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $4,553/Mon.
DUTIES: Improves, maintains commissioned fac instrmnts of the Subaru Telescope to keep & improve reliability & performance. Trbleshts, modifies & upgrds instrmnts in collab with other sci, eng & techs primarily in the Instrmntation Div & throughout Subaru. Appropriately eval the sci performance of the instrmnts & works to ensure efficient night-time oper to maximize sci output. Contrib to upgrds of instrmnts & new instrmnt projs. Drives to summit for PFS & instrmntation duties. Co-operates w/& advises PFS dev team on & participates in implementation & commissioning of PFS instrmnt, mainly for PFI subsystem. Participates in, advises on ensuring subsyst will be reliable for open-use observation. Ensures all doc, tooling, test procedures & fixtures are kept avail for Instrmnt Div eng & techs so instrmnt can be operational for its service lifetime. Pursues a prog of sci or instrmntation rsrch, publishes papers, presents results at conferences.
PRIM QUAL: EDUC/TRNG: PhD from an accredited college or univ in Astronomy or closely related field. EXPER: One to three (1-3) yrs of exper in sci instrmnt operations, including astronomical observations & data reduction, dev & oper of optical or infrared instrmnts, & a progrof rsrch in astronomy. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Considerable knowl of observational astronomy, multiple obj spectrographs, optical or infrared detectors & spectrograph optics & alignment. Abil to undertake a prog of instrmntation rsrch & plan & manage projs. Good written, oral comm & doc skills in English. Must possess a valid driver’s lic (& if use of personal veh on job is req, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equiv to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) & maintain throughout the duration of employ. Must be able to drive a 4-WD veh. PHYS/MED REQS: Must be able to climb stairs & carry instrmnt parts, materials, incl fiber cables, of up to 40 pounds for short distances. Post Offer/Employ Cond: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet & pass a post offer high-altitude medical exam. SEC QUALS: Knowl of Linux sftwre dev, image processing & data anlysis, optical design & mech design, systs design, cryogenics. Exper in instrmntation proj management. Proficiency in the Japanese lang incl speaking, reading & writing.
