PAN-STARRS OBSERVER – ID# 220584  

Institute for Astronomy.  Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Institute for Astronomy (IfA), located in Pukalani, Maui.  Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. 

MINIMUM MONTHLY SALARY: $4,800/Mon. 

DUTIES:  Responsible for safe & efficient night time operations of the Pan-STARRS Observatory, telescopes, cameras & aux sys. Operates Pan-STARRS Observatory remotely from the Pan-STARRS Remote Operations Center at the IfA’s Advanced Technology Research Center (ATRC) facility in Pukalani, Maui or as needed on site at the Observatory near the summit of Haleakala. Makes short term decisions on observing schedule & scientific priorities based on current observing conditions & guidelines established for Pan-STARRS Sky Surveys.  Responds to emergencies at the summit as necessary by driving to the Pan-STARRS Observatory from the ATRC bldg. Maintains meticulous written comments to supplement auto-generated observing logs & fault repts. Maintains close working relationships w/Pan-STARRS Sr Observer & Pan-STARRS Observatory Dir to ensure smooth operation of the observatory & execution of Pan-STARRS surveys. Takes initiative of troubleshooting a variety of real time problems, makes informed decisions when a problem req asst of support staff & contacts appropriate personnel. When on afternoon Swing Shift duty, carries out daily calib of the Observatory & prepares & checks the observing sched for the upcoming night.  Assts Day Crew as nec to maintain smooth operation of the Observatory.  This could incl common mechanical, electrical, or computer software effort & moving heavy equipment. Interacts w/other IfA staff, Pan-STARRS scientific & technical staff & Haleakala Observatories staff. Assts in preparing periodic repts on Observatory operations & performance for internal/external audiences. Assts in ongoing development & improvement of observatory operations software, calib & aux instrumentation through exper & feedback. Contributes to efforts to improve observing efficiency & image qual. Pursues astronomical rsrch on a time avail basis w/an emphasis on Pan-STARRS science.
