The Astronomy Department at Universidad de Concepcion, Chile, invites applications for a tenure-track professor position in all areas of astronomy. Minimum requirements are a Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, or a closely related field, as well as an established record of excellence in research. A strong commitment to teaching and mentoring is required. Applicants will be expected to teach in Spanish within 2 years. The start date is as early as May 2022.
The Astronomy Department includes 14 faculty, 10 postdocs, and ~40 Ph.D. and masters students. Current research spans observational and theoretical Galactic and extragalactic astronomy, including star and cluster formation and evolution, stellar astrophysics evolution and variability, Galactic archeology, the distance ladder, AGN, galaxy clusters and galaxy evolution, astrochemistry, and theoretical astrophysics focused on magneto-hydrodynamical and stellar-dynamical simulations. We pursue a vibrant instrumentation program through the CePIA radio astronomy and the cosmic dust laboratories. The Department is internationally recognized for its public outreach and teacher training programs.
In addition to existing computational and lab facilities, the successful applicants will have access to the 10% of observing time on all existing and future telescopes in Chile, including ALMA, APEX, Gemini-South, Magellan, VLT, and in the future CCAT-Prime, CTA, CST, E-ELT, GMT, and LSST.
