The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is an operations center for NASA’s current and future flagship science observatories, including the Hubble Space Telescope, the James Webb Space Telescope, and the Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope. STScI handles all aspects of operations and development as well as data distribution to the astronomical community and the world via the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST). STScI is a multi-mission center that has over 700 staff in Baltimore, Maryland.
Due to growth, STScI has reconfigured branches within the Operations and Engineering Division. We are seeking two Deputy Division Heads with project management and software development skills to support the science operations and data management divisions for a multi-mission center. Successful candidates will have established experience leading people, managing personnel, developing resources, and facilitating work flows while staying within financial parameters, and must be able to adapt to changing environments.
The Deputy Division Heads will also play an important role in maintaining an environment that recognizes and respects the diverse nature of the workforce in the divisions, and that assures fair opportunity for all with respect to job assignments, career growth, promotion, and recognition.

Science Operations Engineering (SCOPE) Division -
SCOPE provides products and services that support the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Wide Field Infrared Space Telescope (WFIRST). The Division provides software applications used by observers around the world and comprises the operations staff to prepare and execute the science, engineering, and calibration observations. SCOPE consists of 75 staff organized into 5 branches. Three branches are software development branches that create and maintain software applications. Two branches are operations staff who use the software applications to create, plan, and schedule the observations.
Data Management Division (DMD) -
DMD consists of 100+ staff organized into 5 branches that receive, process, calibrate, and distribute data downloaded from space telescopes. In addition they archive data in the Barbara A. Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST) and provide both science data products and tools for the astronomical community to analyze astronomical data. These products, tools and services are instrumental in making the world’s astronomical information accessible to all while advancing the state-of-art of astronomical data, archives, and tools for scientific discovery.
The role for these positions:
Actively participates in the leadership team of the STScI to direct future strategies, tactics, values and goals of the organization.
Ensure adequate information and work plans are available to the staff for the planning process and will work with the staff to define and develop the project and program plans.
The Deputy Division Head manages the Branch Leads in the Division to for ensuring that the organization has the appropriate resources, processes and skills to deliver upon the commitments. Their focus is on facilitating the work flow and optimizing the outcomes and efficiency of processes and procedures.
The Deputy Division Head, along with the Division Head, are responsible for the overall performance of the division within budgetary and program guidelines.
Responsible for providing effective communications with all internal and external stakeholders.
Responsible for the hiring, training, direction, and performance of this organizational unit in accordance with AURA Policies and Procedures. Provide direct management of branch leads and division office staff, including setting goals, evaluations and mentoring.
Requirements and Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in field related to the area of responsibility. Advanced degrees, up to and including PhD, are strongly preferred. A minimum of five years of management/leadership experience with an established record of technical expertise and experience in the division field.
Proven experience effectively managing large software staff while developing and supporting a large complex system
Software engineering experience in waterfall, agile, continuous integration and other software industry best practices
Proven project management experience
Experience working in a scientific community
Experience using both cloud and on premise environments
Experience in planning, scheduling, and/or user applications
