Job Description

The Scuola Normale Superiore (based in Pisa, in the heart of Tuscany) is the top University and research center in Italy. The SNS invites applications for a PostDoctoral Research Fellowship from brilliant researchers with strong background in Physics. The Fellowship is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant INTERSTELLAR recently awarded to the PI of the SNS Cosmology group, Prof. Andrea Ferrara. The Cosmology group at SNS currently includes about 30 members, and is a highly dynamic research and learning environment.

The research areas for the search include: high-redshift galaxies and their interstellar medium, with emphasis on magneto-hydrodynamical simulations. Previous research experience in numerical techniques is highly desirable. An excellent academic record, good command of English and strong communication/writing skills will be important criteria for the selection. The candidate must hold a PhD in Physics or Astrophysics by the starting date of the Fellowship (1st March 2020).

Considerable in-house high performance computing/data analysis resources, including innovative 3D visualization systems, will be available to the appointed researcher. Additional large-scale computational resources can be obtained on a competitive basis at National and European HPC centers.

We seek candidates with significant accomplishments and promise for further achievement in the above fields. The appointment is initially offered for two years, with the possibility of a further one-year extension based on performance. The gross salary will be of 45,000 €/year. Generous research and travel funds will be also available.

The expressions of interest must arrive not later than 10th January 2020 at SNS, using exclusively the forms available at the following URL: https://wwwold.sns.it/bando/assegno-di-ricerca-research-grant-interstellar-medium-high-redshift-galaxies.
