The Department of Astronomy in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for an Instructor/Lecturer (title commensurate with qualifications) in Astronomy.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful applicant will be part of the faculty that teach astronomy and astrophysics. The Department has a vibrant research program, and we have a strong undergraduate curriculum with four majors: Astronomy, Astrophysics, Computer Science + Astronomy, and Astronomy + Data Science.
Duties include teaching sections of introductory astrophysics and/or upper-level undergraduate astrophysics courses (expectation of two courses for a total of 3 teaching sections per semester), monitoring and mentoring teaching assistants, holding office hours to meet with students outside of class time, writing and grading examinations, and assigning grades. We seek an individual who has an abiding interest in teaching and can motivate students to learn through student-centered learning techniques.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree (Instructor title) or PhD (Lecturer title) in Astronomy, or related field.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in college or university level teaching is preferred.
SALARY AND APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
This is a full-time, 9-month appointment, non-tenure track position, renewable yearly subject to enrollments, funding, and positive performance evaluations
Target start date is August 1, 2023. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
