Job Description

Applications are invited for at least one Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work with Drs. Karín Menéndez-Delmestre, Thiago S. Gonçalves, Arianna Cortesi and Marco Grossi at Valongo Observatory of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro as part of the Laboratory for Extragalactic Astrophysics (https://lasex-valongo.com) on topics related to galaxy formation and evolution. The length of the appointment is up to 3 years. The positions are funded through various prestigious grants, including the Serrapilheira Institute and Rio de Janeiro’s Jovem Pesquisador Fluminense. Additional funding opportunities may become available through state/federal agencies. The team is active in a wide range of research subjects, including (though not limited to): galactic stellar structures, AGN, starbursts, star formation quenching, ISM in low-z analogs of high-z galaxy populations, galaxy-environment relation, formation and evolution of lenticular galaxies, galaxy kinematics. The selected candidate will be encouraged to conduct her/his own independent research projects and is also expected to collaborate with the team. 

The successful candidate should have a PhD in Astrophysics or related field. Candidates should also arrange for 2 reference letters to be sent separately. Review of the applications starts on July 13th and will continue until the position is filled. Funding opportunities for more senior posdocs (>7 years since PhD) may be requested at an earlier deadline, June 15th. We strongly encourage applications from underrepresented minorities, and will give those candidates special consideration. 

Starting date: Negotiable, with preference for the Fall semester 2022, but can be as early as July/2022.

The project also includes a generous grant, and we expect to fund at least one international conference per year for fellow to present her/his work related to the research developed with our group. We will also provide computing equipment to the successful candidate.

Compensation Notes

Salary: The initial net salary is based on the average stipend offered to Brazilian postdoctoral researchers in the state of Rio de Janeiro (R$5125-R$6500) and might be increased commensurate with candidate experience and excellence.
