Data Scientist II

Job Description

The Innovations Lab at Fannie Mae is piloting innovative solutions to automate the underwriting process. We are looking for an experienced data scientist to support tools that will automatically verify a borrower’s income, assets, and employment from day one. This an exciting opportunity for any candidate with a quantitative background interested in applying state of the art analytical techniques to loan application data. Prior knowledge of financial or mortgage related data is not required. The candidate will report to senior data scientists in our group and is based out of one of our DC locations. Be part of a team that will release new products to lenders throughout the country, and be at the forefront of technology that will revolutionize how home loans are delivered.

Education

  • An advanced degree in a quantitative field: Physics, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience working with large data sets - prior knowledge of mortgage data a plus but not necessary.
  • Strong programming skills in at least one high level language, preferably Java.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems algorithmically.
  • Familiarity with, or a strong desire to learn about, big data systems.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience with model fitting and error analysis.

Desired Qualifications

  • At least two years of professional experience beyond the degree with demonstrated ability to return deliverables in a timely fashion.

  • Experience building or connecting to rest services in java.

  • Experience with Hadoop and Hive.

  • Experience interfacing with Amazon Web Services.
