Throughout its 100 year history, the School of Physics and Astronomy has brought people together to foster world-changing discoveries. This position is based in the Astronomy Unit, which hosts world leading research groups in cosmology, gravitation, planetary science, and space plasma physics.
The school is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in cosmology to work with Dr Timothy Clifton and Dr Alkistis Pourtsidou on constraining dark energy and modified gravity using non-linear structures in cosmology. Applicants should have a strong research track record within cosmology or related fields, ideally in areas that involve relativistic gravity and large-scale structure formation. Applicants with experience working with modified gravity and dark energy theories are strongly encouraged to apply, as are those with expertise in cosmological simulations and galaxy surveys. The successful candidate will develop the theoretical frameworks required for testing dark energy and modified gravity in the regime of non-linear structure formation, and apply their results to calculate cosmological observables in preparation for the scientific outputs of the Euclid mission.
Candidates must have a PhD in Cosmology or equivalent, and already have research skills in some or all areas specified above. The position is full-time and fixed-term for 3 years, with an expected start date around October 2020. The starting salary will be in the range £33,234–£38,084 pa, inclusive of London Allowance, and benefits include 30 days annual leave, occupational pension scheme, and interest-free season ticket loan. As well as performing research, the successful candidate will be expected to take part in the activities of the wider cosmology group, including participating in discussion groups and seminars, and mentoring or working with PhD students.
