Job Announcement Text:

The Center for Astronomy (ZAH, www.zah.uni-hd.de) at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, is seeking ambitious candidates to fill 2 postdoctoral research positions funded through the ERC Consolidator Grant EMPIRE led by Dr. Frank Bigiel. The goal of the project is to link the physical properties of the ISM to star formation resolved across nearby galaxies using a variety of multi-wavelength observations. A particular focus is the IRAM 30m large program EMPIRE, a 500hr campaign to map high critical density gas tracers across a sample of nearby disk galaxies as well as complementary ALMA high-resolution observations.

Science topics include, but are not limited to, gas - star formation scaling relations, exploring high density tracers vs. star formation and physical conditions in the ISM, multi-line radiative transfer modeling using high density tracers and CO multi-line mapping data, molecular cloud properties from high resolution ALMA observations, etc.

We invite applications from candidates with expertise and/or interest in multi-wavelength studies of nearby galaxies. Experience in radio/(sub)mm/IR observations or working with such data sets would be an asset, though not a requirement. A particular focus will be linking these extragalactic studies to detailed molecular cloud studies in the Milky Way as well as radiative transfer and astrochemical modeling so that candidates with expertise in Galactic ISM/star formation research and/or modeling are particularly encouraged to apply. The successful candidates will also join ongoing international efforts coordinated by the SFNG team (http://www2.mpia-hd.mpg.de/SFNG/Home.html).

Scientific activities at the ZAH cover a wide range of fields in observational and theoretical research. The group has strong collaborative ties with other groups at the ZAH and the Max-Planck-Institute for Astronomy (MPIA). Together with the MPI for Nuclear Physics (MPIK) and the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS), Heidelberg offers a rich and stimulating environment for astrophysical research.

Applicants should have a PhD in astronomy or a closely related field. The appointment will be for an initial period of 2 years, though an extension up to 4 years is possible based on performance. The positions include funds for computing, travel, publications, etc and are funded according to the state public service scale (TV-L E13). The anticipated starting date is summer or fall 2017.

Interested candidates should send application material, including a curriculum vitae and a brief statement of previous research and future research interests to the address above (electronic submissions are preferred). Three letters of recommendation should be requested by the applicant and sent directly to the above address. The deadline for all materials is January 31, 2017; late applications will be considered until the positions are filled. For further information please contact Dr. Frank Bigiel ([email protected]).

Included Benefits:

Heidelberg University is an equal opportunity employer. Social benefits are granted according to the regulations for public service employment. Heidelberg University is a certified family-friendly employer offering e.g. childcare facilities and dual career services.
