Our group on gravitational-arc tomography of the circum-galactic medium (CGM; https://sites.google.com/view/arctomo) and the Department of Astronomy (DAS; https://das.uchile.cl/?lang=en) at Universidad de Chile, invite applications for a postdoctoral position in astrophysics. The postdoc will work with Prof. Sebastian Lopez at the DAS on studies of the CGM. A fraction of the time will be available for conducting independent research.
We seek a qualified and motivated researcher with a Ph.D. in astronomy or physics. Preference will be given to candidates with a background (either observational or theoretical) in topics related to diffuse gas in the universe, including the CGM, the intergalactic medium and/or the high-redshift interstellar medium, and/or topics related to gravitational lensing. The position is funded for 2-years by a so-called ESO-Chile Joint Committee grant, with a salary of CLP $22.500.000 (approx. US$31,000) per year, and may be extended through external grants. Given the current pandemic situation the starting date during 2021 is flexible.
The DAS is one of the leading astronomy centers in Chile and it hosts large internationally recognized collaborations. The DAS fosters an engaging and scientifically productive environment, with 24 faculty members and over 30 graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. Multi-wavelength expertise and a wide array of research fields are pursued by our members: from the solar system and planet formation, to cosmology and the high redshift universe. The DAS also hosts the Millimeter-wave Laboratory, which designs, builds, and tests receivers for use in radio-astronomy, along with ALMA instrumentation development.
The postdoc will be eligible for the 10% time guaranteed to Chilean institutions on all facilities in the country like, e.g. VLT, ALMA, Gemini-S, Magellan, APEX, SOAR, ASTE, La Silla, CTIO, LSST and the future ELTs.
Applicants must send a cover letter, a CV, a list of publications, a research statement, and arrange for 3 reference letters to be sent directly by the recommenders to Prof. Sebastian Lopez ([email protected]). Applications received before March 31 2021 will get full consideration; later applications may still be considered until the position is filled. Prospective candidates are encouraged to contact Prof. Lopez for additional information.
