Job Description

Applications are solicited for a joint appointment of staff scientist at CASSACA and assistant professorship at UCAS in the areas of observational astronomy and/or instrumentation. CASSACA is a branch office of the CAS National Astronomical Observatories of China (NAOC), located on the campus of Universidad de Chile’s Astronomy Department at Cerro Calan, Santiago, Chile. UCAS is one of three premier higher education institutions of CAS, located in the northern suburb of Beijing, China. We’re seeking an outstanding young scientist to lead the efforts in promoting observational collaborations between Chinese and Chilean astronomers, establishing new observational facilities in Chile, and (or) building new instrumentation for future ground-based telescopes. Candidates should have at least one year of postdoctoral work experience, and demonstrated skills of leading independent investigation in their areas of expertise. The position will be based in Santiago, but work elsewhere in Chile or China may be necessary depending on the circumstances.  The successful candidate will be able to enter tenure track as UCAS faculty after two or three years, assuming satisfactory performances on the job. The salary level and benefits will be determined based on experience and qualifications, but would be competitive at the junior faculty level in Santiago. Qualified candidate with fluent Spanish may also be able to participate in educational activities and hold adjunct faculty appointment at Universidad de Chile.

Please send application materials including a CV, research statement and publication list as well as three recommendation letters from colleagues familiar with the applicant’s work to CASSACA at [email protected]. Please make sure to receive confirmation of the receipt before the deadline of September 30th, 2017. Note that it is the applicant’s responsibility to be eligible to work in Chile, and in some cases it could take a considerable length of time to complete the necessary paperwork.
