Job Description

Case Western Reserve University

Instructor in Astronomy

The Department of Astronomy at Case Western Reserve University invites applications for the position of Instructor in the areas of Teaching and Service, to begin on or about August 20, 2018. This is a non-tenure track position with the potential for advancement to Senior Instructor based on strong performance in teaching and service. The teaching load is equal to that of tenure-track faculty: one course per semester, plus student mentoring and occasional one credit seminars. Further details about the Department of Astronomy can be found at http://astronomy.case.edu.

The successful candidate will teach general education courses in astronomy, courses for the major program, contribute to the university’s SAGES seminars, develop and implement classroom teaching aids, support data analysis instruction, and support research efforts, e.g., by developing new techniques in data reduction and analysis. The Instructor will also have responsibility for helping to develop and maintain the computational and observational facilities of the department, both on and off campus. Required computer skills include familiarity with common operating systems, support for new and legacy astronomy-specific software, networking in a secure environment, and an ability to interface with the campus IT community.

A Ph.D. in Astronomy is required. Qualifications in computer or information science will be considered positively. Teaching experience is expected, as is experience in astronomical observations and software development. The department owns and operates the Burrell Schmidt telescope on Kitt Peak, and has a diverse array of computational assets.

To apply, candidates should submit a cv, a statement of teaching philosophy, and a letter of interest highlighting teaching experience and experience relevant to computational and technical research support. Candidates should also provide the names and contact information of three references. Send applications in PDF format to [email protected] with “Instructor search” in the subject line. Please submit your application by May 1.
