Job Description

The Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) invites applications for one Postdoc / scientific software developer in galaxy evolution. The candidate is expected to split their time half and half between (1) the WEAVEApertif survey and (2) the scientific data flow of the 4MOST instrument.

The WEAVE-Apertif survey will obtain integral field spectroscopy data for an HI selected sample of nearby galaxies. The successful candidate will develop a pipeline to derive the ionized gas, stellar population and kinematic properties of the observed galaxies. The 4MOST instrument is an optical multi-object spectrograph being developed for ESO. The successful candidate will assist in the development of the 4MOST distributed operations model, in particular with requirements, testing and verification of software.

Applicants shall hold a university degree in astrophysics or related discipline. We are looking for a candidate with previous experience with galaxy spectroscopic data analysis. Any of the following will be an additional asset: familiarity with formal software development, especially testing and verification; work in large, distributed project teams; capability to successfully handle several projects simultaneously.

The AIP is an equal opportunity employer and particularly encourages women to apply. The AIP values diversity. The appointment will initially be made for 2 years, with possible extensions based on performance and availability of funding. The salary is based on the German public service TV-L E13 scale.
