The Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET), located at McDonald Observatory, is one of the largest optical telescopes in operation. The HET has recently been upgraded to a wide-field system and equipped with innovative new instrumentation. McDonald Observatory is recruiting a Science Operations Manager for HET. This position oversees all aspects of conducting observations with the HET, including HET’s queue observing system. The Science Operations Manager supervises all staff at HET engaged in night operations and will provide leadership, technical support in the science operations of the HET, including managing the HET science and night time engineering operations, supervising night time operations, and monitoring and reporting on HET optical and instrumentation performance, data acquisition and reduction. A doctoral degree in astronomy or closely related field is required. Five years working in a collaborative service astronomy role or relevant experience. Position is located at McDonald Observatory, 16 miles from Ft. Davis, Texas (440 miles west of the UT Austin campus). A residence in the Observatory's residential community is available.
