Job Description

Steward Observatory’s Mountain Operations group is seeking candidates to fill 1-2 positions of Principal Engineer, Electrical. The successful candidate(s) will join a diverse group of scientists, engineers and technicians who work to maintain and upgrade Tucson-area telescopes operated by Steward Observatory. In addition to providing engineering support for telescope maintenance and upgrades, the successful candidate(s) will provide engineering support in a team environment for projects such as the Arizona Robotic Telescope Network (ARTN), a project that currently includes the 90” Bok Telescope on Kitt Peak, the 61” Kuiper Telescope on Mt. Bigelow, and the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope on Mt Graham.

The Department of Astronomy and Steward Observatory is a world renowned scientific institution conducting research at the forefront of modern astrophysics. Our faculty, postdoctoral fellows and students are active in the fields of observational, computational, laboratory, and theoretical astrophysics. Steward Observatory is the research arm of the Astronomy Department at the University of Arizona.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Support operation and upgrades for Tucson-area telescopes operated by Steward Observatory including telescopes on Mt. Lemmon, Mt. Bigelow, Kitt Peak, and Mt. Graham. Support includes repair and maintenance of electronic systems; Work at sites with elevations exceeding 10,000 feet to support integration, testing and trouble shooting of telescope subsystems; Provide design, development, implementation, and commissioning of new electrical, electromechanical and control systems; Provide electronic design assistance for other Steward Observatory projects as required; Additional duties as assigned.
