Job Description

The Faculty of Engineering and Sciences (FES) of Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez (UAI) in Santiago, Chile, seeks applications for an open rank faculty position in the area of astrostatistics and astroinformatics beginning as soon as March 1, 2021.  We are interested in candidates whose research has a strong component in statistics or machine learning and seek to advance the frontier in data analysis and modeling in Astrophysics. We are particularly interested in candidates whose astrophysical interests lie in planetary sciences or plan to exploit the upcoming Vera Rubin’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). UAI is a founding partner of the Data Observatory, offering ample opportunities to work in multidisciplinary projects around data science with private, academic and public sector actors, therefore candidates who have interest in extending to other areas in the context of the Data Observatory are particularly encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will join Professors Rafael Brahm, Andres Jordan and Gijs Mulders  at the newly created Astrophysics group at FES/UAI. The chosen candidates are expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Physics, Astronomy, Statistics, and related fields, in Spanish and/or English. Candidates do not need to be fluent in Spanish at the moment of applying. The successful candidate will have access to 10% of all telescope time in Chile, including VLT, ALMA, Gemini, Magellan, and other telescopes in the country, as well as access to future facilities such as the GMT and E-ELT. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. As a reference, an Assistant Professor should expect an annual remuneration ranging between 36 and 48 million CLP (approximately 46,000 and 62,000 USD at the current exchange rate, respectively). This salary does not include potential additions from grants or research contracts.

Applications require: a cover letter, a complete curriculum vitae, and a description (5 pages maximum) of research and teaching interests. Contact information for at least three letters of recommendation must also be submitted. Applicants should apply by submitting the above materials as a single pdf file to <[email protected]> with the subject “Job Position in Astroinformatics”. Applications should be submitted by November 1, 2020 to ensure full consideration.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status or any other characteristic protected by law. At FES we believe that diversity broadens our research scope and enhances the quality of our education, so we highly encourage women, international scholars and minorities to apply for these positions.
