PhD position on gamma-ray bursts and host galaxies
Job Summary
Job Description
We are seeking candidates to fill a 3-year Ph.D position at the Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Marseille (LAM) in collaboration with the Centre de Physique des Particules de Marseille (CPPM). The position is funded through the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES) and the Institut de Physique de l'Univers (IphU) of Aix-Marseille Université, on a project led by Véronique Buat (LAM) and Damien Dornic (CPPM). The candidates are expected to have a master’s degree in astronomy, astrophysics or related fields and to be enthousiastic to work in a collaborative manner. A good expertise in python language is needed.
The project is in line with the future space mission SVOM expected to be launched mid-2023. SVOM will reveal gamma ray bursts (GRBs) in galaxies up to large redshifts. Ground follow up observations will be performed with the COLIBRI telescope. Optical and X-ray data from COLIBRI and the MXT instrument on board of SVOM will be combined to study the synchrotron emission of GRB afterglows on the largest wavelength coverage. These emissions will deliver a unique information on the properties of galaxies along the line of sight of the afterglows, up to the very high redshift because of their extreme luminosity and are also potential sources of high energy neutrinos.
The successful candidate will be an active member of the SVOM/COLIBRI teams and is expected to take an active part to the scientific life within our laboratory: journal clubs, seminars, meetings with research visitors. She/he will attend at least one international conference per year and numerous collaboration meetings.
To apply please send the following documents in a single pdf file
- a CV ( 2 pages max)
- a cover letter explaining your motivation
- a transcript of your grades obtained for your bachelor’s and master’s degrees (if applicable, the most recent results for the current year)
Two reference letters will be addressed directly to Veronique Buat.
The starting data of the Ph.D is expected on 1st October 2022
