Job Description

The Astronomy Instrumentation Group at Cardiff University is seeking applications to fill the position of Senior Postdoctoral Research Fellow.

The research fellow will work within the active and diverse Astronomy Instrumentation Group (AIG) at Cardiff. The AIG has a rich heritage in the field of mm and sub-mm instrumentation, making significant contributions to many high-profile ground, balloon and space-based experiments. The fellow would also be encouraged to actively engage in the application of AIG technologies to non-astronomy areas, such as Earth Observation and remote sensing.

The research fellow will work with a team of researchers developing novel optical and quasi-optical devices and systems for the next generation of FIR and sub-mm photometric, polarimetric and spectroscopic instruments. Key development areas are broad-band coatings for large aperture cryogenic optics, large aperture metamaterial components (filters, lenses, polarisers), and the development of novel devices for higher frequency applications.

This research will also involve enhancing and developing our extensive experimental and fabrication capabilities in Cardiff and, importantly, leading interactions with commercial partners for the development of new bespoke fabrication processes and experimental techniques.

Applicants are strongly advised to contact the PIs Prof Peter Hargrave ([email protected]) or Prof Carole Tucker ([email protected]) ahead of application and we reserve the right to close this application early.
