Job Description

We invite applications for a three-year postdoctoral position based at IRAP in Toulouse (France), to work in the area of high-energy astrophysics.

The successful candidate will join an innovative project involving four French institutes and aiming at a comprehensive understanding of the population of gamma-ray halos around pulsars in the Milky Way. The project as a whole features theoretical investigation of the dynamics of pair confinement around a pulsar-supernova remnant system, characterization of gamma-ray halos from GeV and TeV observations, and contribution to the preparation of future instruments such as CTA or SWGO in light of this recently discovered phenomenon.

The postdoctoral researcher at IRAP is expected to primarily focus on the search for gamma-ray halos in Fermi-LAT survey data but he/she is invited to take part in different aspects of the project by interacting closely with other project members from LUPM in Montpellier, IRFU in Paris-Saclay, and CENBG in Bordeaux. At IRAP, the successful applicant will work with Pierrick Martin, Luigi Tibaldo, and Jürgen Knödlseder, and be welcomed in a group involved for more than 20 years in gamma-ray astronomy and particularly active in the areas of interstellar emissions, massive-star forming regions, novae, and supernovae. Additionnally, he/she will be part of the Fermi-LAT collaboration and CTA consortium, and is expected to have constant interactions with the international community.

Candidates for the position should hold a Ph.D. in astronomy, astroparticle physics, or equivalent. The candidate should have a good background in high-energy astrophysics and intermediate to advanced programming skills. Experience in gamma-ray data analysis is a plus. Good communication skills and command of the English language are required as the position will involve a lot of team work.

The position is funded for up to 3 years, subject to yearly renewal upon mutual satisfaction. The appointment is expected to be made during the spring of 2020. Arrangement for an earlier or later start can be negotiated. The net monthly salary will be in the range of 2100€ to 3000€ (before income tax), commensurate with experience and qualification. All basic insurance benefits will be provided. A budget for computer equipment and participation to conferences and workshops will be available.

Interested candidates should submit a CV, list of publications, research statement covering both past experience and future plans (not exceeding 5 pages), and arrange for a maximum of three letters of recommendation to be provided. Applicants are invited to follow the guidelines presented here: https://jobregister.aas.org/postdoc-application-guidelines. Applications and letters should be sent to [email protected] by December 15th. Questions regarding the position should be addressed to [email protected].
