SUBARU NIGHT OPERATION ASSISTANT – ID# 18610. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, located in Maunakea & Hilo, Hawai‘i. DUTIES: Assists the Observations System Associate (OSA) by starting up/shutting down the telescope, taking calibration data for the instruments, monitoring the safety & health of personnel at the summit, checking the system & weather periodically, recording in the log & operating the system. May take over OSA’s role. REQUIRES: Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Astronomy or related Science, Engineering, or Technology field. 1-3 years of experience working in astronomy, science, engineering or technical fields. At least 1 year of driving experience. (Experience in astronomical observation & operation of the telescope in college course may sub. for 1 year of experience). Knowledge of basic astronomy concepts, word processing, & spreadsheet software. Ability to operate large-scale precision mechanical system, electrical system or electronics with high complexity; startup & shutdown telescope; & effectively interact & communicate.
