Assistant or Associate Professor in Astronomy (Astronomical Instrumentation)

The Department of Astronomy at the University of Virginia invites applicants for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position with a focus on astronomical instrumentation. The candidate will join a diverse department with expertise in theoretical and observational astronomy and astrochemistry. Applicants with an expertise in ground-based and/or space-based astronomical instrument design and development are encouraged to apply.

The Department has guaranteed access to the Large Binocular Telescope, Apache Point Observatory, and Steward Observatory (including the Magellan Telescopes in Chile). The Department is a partner in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) IV collaboration, for which it is leading the APOGEE-2 Project, and is expected to participate in SDSS-V. The Department also runs the Virginia Astronomical Instrumentation Laboratory (VAIL), which has traditionally focused on optical and near-infrared instrumentation for ground-based telescopes and has recently initiated balloon-borne instrumentation. Furthermore, the Department has strong research and development ties with the staff at the Headquarters of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), which is located on the grounds of the University of Virginia, and the NRAO Central Development Laboratory.

In addition to the observational and instrumentation endeavors, the Department hosts the Virginia Institute for Theoretical Astronomy (VITA) as well as the Virginia Initiative for Cosmic Origins (VICO). The University of Virginia is committed to establishing an Anchor Program in Advanced Astronomy Data within the University's Data Science Institute to develop solutions to computational and data management challenges.

Candidates are expected to be dedicated to our mission and passionate about research and teaching. In addition to securing external funding to support research endeavors, candidates will be expected to teach astronomy at the graduate and undergraduate levels and provide service to the University, Department, and professional organizations. The appointment begins with the fall term of 2019, with an anticipated start date of August 25, 2019. Applicants must be on track to receive a Ph.D. in the relevant field by May 2019 and must hold a PhD at the time of appointment. Candidates with some postdoctoral experience are highly preferred.

Complete a candidate profile online and attach: a cover letter describing research, instrumentation, and teaching experience; a curriculum vitae; and a statement of research interests. Applicants should also arrange for three letters of reference to be emailed directly to: [email protected] with subject heading "Assistant or Associate Professor in Astronomical Instrumentation."

To be considered, applications must be received by January 11, 2019.
