Job Description

The Department of Astrophysics at the University of Vienna is looking for a high-level Senior Scientist to chair our instrumentation group for “ground-based” astronomy. We are involved in the development of international instrumentation projects, both at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the European Space Agency (ESA). (A similar position is advertised for our instrumentation group “space-based”.) After a probation period the position can be extended to a permanent contract.
Your tasks include active participation in management, science, and education. This includes coordination and implementation of astronomical instrumentation software projects; project management, (co-)supervision and (co-)organisation within the institute's "laboratory for astronomical instrumentation”; conducting independent teaching, (co-)supervision of students; and contributions to general organisational and administrative tasks.
You should have a Doctoral/PhD degree in astronomy or astrophysics and strong experience in astronomical software development for data analysis of optical and infrared instrumentation. Specifically, expertise with programming languages (C, Python) and with the development of astronomical software tools (data reduction pipelines). Ability to work in a team and excellent communication skills in English are required. Experiences in teaching and training, (co-)supervising students, and (co-)organising events are desirable.
