The Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics of the Pennsylvania State University has an opening for an assistant or associate research professor with Prof. David Burrows and Prof. Abe Falcone. A PhD in Physics, Astronomy, or a closely related field is required, with at least two years of postdoctoral experience. The position will entail development of algorithms to identify transient phenomena, and the implementation of these algorithms in software for execution on board the ESA Athena X-ray astronomy mission. Title and salary will be commensurate with experience. Previous experience with X-ray astronomy data analysis of transient and highly variable objects using data from Swift, Chandra or XMM is required. A strong programming background is also required, and experience with flight software is desirable. The successful applicant will be responsible for meeting software delivery dates but is encouraged to also undertake an independent research program. Penn State is the lead institution for the ACIS instrument on Chandra and for the X-ray Telescope on the Swift Gamma-ray Burst Explorer. The successful applicant will have access to other Penn State facilities, including the Hobby-Eberly telescope.
